Driven by the currents of survival, figures push forward against a surging wave. We stand before the Suong, Sulong Mural, a powerful artwork by Archie Oclos. This mural, gracing the Binondo Pumping Station in Manila, captures the Filipino spirit in the face of adversity. Suong, Sulong translates to “push forward.” The mural depicts figures with red horns, symbolizing action and aggressiveness as they navigate through a turbulent wave of water. This water represents the typhoons and calamities, like Ondoy and Yolanda, that have challenged the Philippines. Oclos uses brushstrokes and the movement of the water to evoke the emotions tied to these events. But amidst the chaos, there is unity. The figures struggle together, helping each other survive. The Suong, Sulong Mural serves as a reminder of the Filipino resilience. It’s a tribute to their ability to unite and push forward, even in the toughest of times. The artist, Archie Oclos, is a University of the Philippines graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Painting. He intended this riverside mural to be an inspiration to all who see it. May it remind us of the strength found in community and the power of the human spirit to overcome.
