“Tile-makers,” a young boy whispered, pointing towards the expanse of the Tuileries Garden. “That’s what it used to be.” Right here, where Parisian life flourishes, where elegant gardens stretch toward the Louvre, once stood humble tile factories. The Tuileries Garden, a witness to centuries of history, whispers tales of ambition, artistry, and revolution. Catherine de’ Medici, the widowed queen, envisioned a palace west of Paris in the 1560s. She sought solace and splendor, away from the memories of the Hôtel des Tournelles. The Tuileries Palace, named after the tile factories that previously occupied this land, became her grand project. Catherine, inspired by the Italian Renaissance, commissioned a garden to complement her palace. It was a vibrant tapestry of fountains, a labyrinth, and a grotto. Faience images of flora and fauna adorned the space, crafted by the renowned Bernard Palissy. The Tuileries Garden hosted lavish royal festivities. Ambassadors from England marveled at its beauty. The wedding of Catherine’s daughter, Marguerite de Valois, to Henri III of Navarre, unfolded amidst its grandeur. Yet, the story of the Tuileries is not just one of royal splendor. It echoes with the tumult of the French Revolution. In 1789, Louis XVI, a prisoner of the revolution, was brought to the Tuileries. The garden, once a public space, became a symbol of royal confinement. The Swiss Guards, defending their king during the storming of the palace on August 10, 1792, met a tragic end within these very gardens. Even in its destruction, the Tuileries left its mark. The tile factories that predated the palace ceased operation when Catherine acquired the land. This marked the end of tile production in Paris, and the rise of slate as the preferred roofing material. The palace itself, connected to the Louvre by a gallery along the Seine, met its demise during the Commune of Paris in 1871. Yet, the name “Tuileries” lives on in the gardens, a metro station, and an entire district in central Paris.
