Ever wonder how Lynchs Bridge earned its name? We’re standing before Lynchs Bridge, a vital artery in Melbourne’s west. It links Flemington’s Smithfield Road to Footscray’s Ballarat Road, spanning the Maribyrnong River. Lynchs Bridge wasn’t always the sturdy structure you see today. Its story began in 1849 with a simple punt operated by Michael Lynch, owner of the nearby Pioneer Hotel. Imagine needing to cross the river before the bridge. You’d rely on Lynch’s punt. He saw the need for a more permanent crossing and petitioned for a pontoon bridge in 1863. Despite local opposition, Lynchs Bridge, in its earliest form, opened just in time for the 1864 Melbourne Cup. Initially, the bridge had a toll, much to the chagrin of local residents. But Lynch cleverly marketed his bridge to Western District farmers. He assured them a single toll was all they needed to reach the livestock yards on the opposite bank. After years of debate and negotiations, Lynchs Bridge finally came under public ownership in 1882. The toll was abolished, much to the relief of locals. But the story doesn’t end there. The original Lynchs Bridge fell into disrepair and was closed in 1901. A temporary pontoon bridge, with its own small toll, filled the void during the lengthy debate over funding for a replacement. The new timber bridge, with its occasionally troublesome lifting span, opened in 1903. Lynchs Bridge continued to evolve, facing closures, temporary repairs, and ongoing debates about its future. A concrete and steel bridge replaced the timber structure in 1939, streamlining the road alignment. Decades later, increasing traffic and a concerning number of accidents led to a coronial inquest in 1989. The recommendation? Duplicate the bridge. The duplicate bridge, completed in 1992, significantly improved safety and traffic flow. Even today, Lynchs Bridge continues to adapt. It underwent an upgrade in 2019, strengthening its structure for the future while preserving its art deco charm. Even less visible modifications were made in 2021 as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, subtly altering the piers of the newer bridge to mitigate flooding. So, as you stand here on Lynchs Bridge, remember it’s not just a crossing, it’s a testament to Melbourne’s growth and a symbol of its evolving history.
