Whispers carried on the sea breeze speak of lives lived and memories cherished at Onetangi Cemetery. It is more than a final resting place. Onetangi Cemetery is a chronicle of Waiheke Island’s heart.

Welcome to Onetangi Cemetery. It is also known as Waiheke Lawn Cemetery. This tranquil ground offers solace and reflection. Auckland Council owns and maintains it.

The first burial here occurred in 1949. Onetangi Cemetery is still operational today. Plots are carefully managed due to the cemetery’s size. Each plot measures 1.2 x 2.4 metres. This allows for a second burial at extra depth. There is no pre-purchasing of plots. The next available plot is always used.

Onetangi Cemetery also has designated areas. These include spaces for ash interments and baby burials. A special section honours fallen soldiers. It is reserved for Returned Services burials and ash interments.

Jim Anderton rests here. He was a notable politician and former Deputy Prime Minister. Anderton died on January 7 2018. He was interred at Onetangi Cemetery alongside his mother Joyce Henry.

The Waiheke Island Historical Society meticulously recorded burials here in 1992. Audrey Reece Mabel Asplin and Beverley Beetlestone led this work. They divided Onetangi Cemetery into five areas. They transcribed headstones row by row.

Onetangi Cemetery is easily accessible. It has a large parking lot. It can accommodate 40 to 60 cars. The cemetery is wheelchair accessible. A public toilet is available.

Approaching from Onetangi offers the easiest access. This route lets you pull directly into the driveway. Coming from Ostend requires crossing oncoming traffic. Please stay safe.

As you wander through Onetangi Cemetery notice the headstones. They tell silent stories of islanders. They reflect lives intertwined with the sea vineyards and rolling hills.

Consider the practicalities of burials before Onetangi Cemetery opened. The Pioneer Cemetery in Te Matuku Bay closed in the late 1930s. All burials then occurred on the mainland. The undertaker used a special leather cover. This protected the coffin during the ferry journey.

Imagine families gathering here. They came to remember loved ones. They shared stories of lives well-lived. Generations connect within this peaceful space.

Today Onetangi Cemetery remains a vital part of Waiheke Island. It is a place to reflect honor and remember. Its story is etched in stone. It lives on in the hearts of those who visit.

Take a moment to appreciate the quiet beauty of Onetangi Cemetery. Remember those who shaped Waiheke Island’s identity. Let their stories inspire you. Cherish every moment.
