Liceo 29 Alicia Goyena was created in 1972. It initially operated as a center dependent on the Consejo de Educacion Secundaria Basica y Superior. The school was first located on Avenida Brasil. It was known as Liceo 12 “B”. By 1974, it was officially named Liceo N29, ex 12 “B”.
The school faced challenges early on. In 1978, the property owners filed an eviction lawsuit. By 1979, Liceo 29 Alicia Goyena had to temporarily close its doors.
But Liceo 29 Alicia Goyena was reborn. It was re-established at Cuñapirú 1961. This street is now known as Juan José de Amézaga.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1982. Law N15311 designated the school as Liceo “Alicia Goyena”. This was in honor of Alicia Goyena. She was a dedicated teacher who influenced education in the 20th century. For 33 years, she led the Instituto Batlle y Ordoñez. She supported many women and changed their lives.
In 1983, a tribute to Alicia Goyena took place at the school. Julieta González de Álvarez was the director then. A commemorative plaque was placed in the central patio. It honored Goyena’s contributions.
Fast forward to the 21st century. The year 2018 marked the completion of a new three-story building. It faced Blandengues 2020. The modern facilities met current educational needs. The new building was inaugurated in May 2019.
Today, Liceo 29 Alicia Goyena has 19 groups of Ciclo Basico. It follows the Plan 2006 curriculum. The school offers extended learning with various workshops and tutoring sessions.
Alicia Goyena was born in 1897. She began teaching in 1918. She replaced Eugenio Petit Muñoz as a professor. Later, she took over the literature chair from María Eugenia Vaz Ferreira.
Goyena was the director of the Instituto Batlle y Ordoñez from 1944 to 1977. She passed away in 1977. In 1978, the OEA honored her work.
The new building cost 80 million pesos. The facilities include classrooms, labs, and indoor and outdoor patios. There is also a sports area. Around 520 students attend. They come from La Comercial, La Figurita, Reus, and nearby areas.
Liceo 29 Alicia Goyena operates on an extended schedule. It offers workshops in dance, audiovisual production, animation, and more.
