Did you know the Mercan Camii in Istanbul has a history shrouded in mystery? Its exact construction date remains unknown. The Mercan Camii stands proudly in the heart of Istanbul’s bustling spice market. Its location is a testament to its historical ties with the city’s vibrant commercial life.
The Mercan Camii’s founder is also a mystery. Legend whispers of a generous benefactor. This benefactor’s identity remains lost to time. However records indicate a significant renovation in 1702. This renovation was commissioned by Nezir Agha. It was based on the writings of Altuncu Zade Hafiz Muhammed.
Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi a renowned scholar studied the mosque extensively. Ayverdi noted that the walls and dimensions remained largely unchanged after the 1702 repair. The unique topuz parmaklı (club-fingered) windows still stand. These windows indicate the existence of side galleries. Ayverdi believed the thick walls are evidence of the mosque’s age.
According to Ayverdi the current structure largely dates back to the 17th century. He noted that some elements survived the 1702 renovation. The marble mirror with Rumi carvings above the entrance is one such element. However numerous fires necessitated many subsequent repairs. These repairs changed the original character of the Mercan Camii. Subsequent renovations especially in the 1950s further obscured its original appearance.
The Mercan Camii’s interior dimensions are approximately 21.65 meters by 17.15 meters. Its walls are 1.25 meters thick. A spacious prayer hall extends 4.65 meters deep. The mosque’s single minaret is tall and made of cut stone. This architectural element dates from the 18th century. The minaret has only one balcony.
The mosque’s endowment details income distribution. Five parts were allocated to the imam. Two to the teacher. One part was assigned to the custodian. One went to the building maintenance. Three to the caretaker. One part went to the manager. Three parts were assigned for community needs. One part was given to the religious scholars and the soup kitchen.
Today the Mercan Camii welcomes a congregation of approximately 150 people for regular prayers. On Fridays the number swells to around 2000. The Mercan Camii remains a vibrant center of faith and a living link to Istanbul’s rich history. Its enduring presence in the heart of the city serves as a constant reminder of its enduring spirit.
