In the heart of the Danish countryside stands a testament to time and tradition: Egå Mølle. Unlike the towering structures of the Netherlands, this mill, rebuilt in 1920 after a fire ravaged its predecessor, sits close to the earth, its whitewashed walls echoing the hues of a simpler time. Egå Mølle, also known as Risshøj Mølle, is a “Dutch windmill”. This means that unlike older post mills, only the cap of Egå Mølle rotates to face the wind. While the original Egå Mølle graced these lands in 1859, fate, in the form of a devastating fire in 1918, demanded its replacement. The mill we see today journeyed from the village of Råved near Mejlby, finding a new home and purpose here in Egå. But Egå Mølle is more than just a relic of the past. Inside, the gears still turn, a testament to the ingenuity of Frichs Fabrikker in Aarhus, the very same company that would later become famous for its railway materials. The gears themselves are a marvel, a blend of iron rings and oak teeth. Today, the lower level of Egå Mølle has been transformed into a unique space, a gathering place where up to 48 people can celebrate amidst the rustic charm of a bygone era. Imagine weddings beneath the watchful gaze of the sails, birthdays celebrated with the scent of freshly baked bread, for Egå Mølle, in its reincarnation, has become a place where history meets modern life in perfect harmony.
