What would you say to an 1888 church dedication with a twist? The Church of Saint John the Evangelist dedication ceremony was more than just a religious event. It was a spectacle illuminated by the glow of a grand Advent window. This window, originally placed at the west end, was a gift from a group known as The Children’s League. Imagine the dedication ceremony bathed in the colorful light cast by this impressive window. The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, located at the corner of Kostner and Byron in Chicago’s Old Irving Park, has a rich history. It all began in 1883 with Mrs. Boswinkel. This devout Episcopalian took it upon herself to hold Sunday school classes in her home for the children of her fellow churchgoers. Little did she know that her small act of faith would eventually lead to the construction of this beautiful church. Over the years, the Church of Saint John the Evangelist underwent several transformations. A notable one occurred in 1924 during its renovation. The church was physically raised and moved two feet north. The original entrance was replaced with a narthex facing Kostner Avenue, and a new round window was installed. The church’s exterior was then covered in stucco, giving it the same look it has today. Inside, the Church of Saint John the Evangelist houses a collection of stunning stained-glass windows. These windows, depicting Christ and various saints, were installed in the 1960s and serve as memorials to deceased members of the congregation. The church’s history is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
