Beneath the Mallorcan sun, La Misericòrdia stands as a testament to Palma’s compassionate heart. Originally called the Casa de la Misericordia, this institution began not here, but in a humble house with an orchard near the Hospital General in 1677. It served as a beacon of hope for the poor and needy. As time marched on, the original structure deteriorated. In 1817, architect Pere Joan Bauçà envisioned a grander space for this noble purpose. He drafted plans for a new building, laying the foundation for what we see today. La Misericòrdia’s construction unfolded in stages. The first phase, between 1817 and 1831, focused on the section along what is now Carrer de la Misericordia. The austere and functional design reflects the institution’s focus on practicality. The upper floors provided dormitories and workshops, offering both shelter and the means to earn a living. The lower levels housed administrative offices, storerooms, kitchens, dining areas, and a place for quiet reflection: the oratorio. The chapel, a beautiful addition to La Misericòrdia, likely arose between 1831 and 1836, possibly under the guidance of architect Joan Sureda. He may have taken over Bauçà’s project, especially after the institution came under the Provincial Council. Between 1850 and 1870, La Misericòrdia expanded further. A second block was built specifically for men. The original building became dedicated to women. This division reflects the social norms of the time. It also speaks to the growing needs of Palma’s vulnerable population. The final expansion, towards the end of the 19th century, incorporated the land of Camp Roig cemetery. This cemetery had served as the final resting place for those who died at the nearby Hospital General, often with limited resources. It even had its own small oratory, which was demolished in 1878 to make way for La Misericòrdia’s growth. Architect Miquel Rigo initially led this phase. After his sudden death, Joaquín Pavía stepped in to complete the project. Today, La Misericòrdia thrives as a cultural center, managed by the Consell de Mallorca since 1977. This transformation honors its legacy of service. It also opens its doors to a wider community. La Misericòrdia’s story reminds us that even in the grandest buildings, the simplest acts of compassion hold the greatest power.
