Tucked away between the Petite Ceinture railway line and the bustling Boulevard Ney, lies a hidden gem. Villa des Tulipes, a surprising oasis of calm in the vibrant Clignancourt district. Villa des Tulipes is a world apart from its surroundings. Established in the mid-19th century on land that once belonged to the old village of Montmartre, Villa des Tulipes is a narrow, three-meter-wide lane. It’s lined with charming pavilions, each unique in its design. The villa boasts a stunning variety of flowers and plants, a true feast for the senses. While tulips are honored in its name, a profusion of other flowers share the spotlight. Roses, bamboo, wisteria, cherry blossoms, and lilacs all thrive here. They grow from the ground, spill from pots, and adorn walls and fences. In 1954, residents chose the name Villa des Tulipes, “Tulip Villa”. Today, with its abundance of blooms, it might be more aptly named Villa des Fleurs, “Flower Villa”. This floral haven provides a welcome respite from the Parisian hustle and bustle. Look closely and discover delightful details left by the residents. A trash can adorned with a floral motif, children’s drawings on the walls, a birdcage filled with second-hand books, a bell serving as a doorbell, and fairy lights draped on trees. Antique-style lampposts line the lane, and two street art murals, each in a contrasting style, stand at either end. These artistic touches complete this eclectic scene, where calm and tranquility reign. The contrast with the rest of the area is even more striking. During one visit, the nearby Boulevard Ney was a hub of construction activity, further emphasizing the villa’s peaceful atmosphere. Villa des Tulipes truly is a hidden floral paradise in the heart of Paris.
