Here stands a blue plaque a testament to bravery. This is the London home of Frederick Hitch a Victoria Cross recipient. His name resonates with the echoes of Rorke’s Drift a battle etched in history.

Frederick Hitch was born in Southgate Middlesex in 1856. He joined the British Army serving as a private in the 24th Regiment of Foot. He fought at the Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War. At only 22 years old his courage shone brightly.

The battle was a desperate defense against overwhelming odds. Hitch and Corporal William Allen bravely maintained communication with the hospital. They faced intense enemy fire. Despite severe wounds they continued passing ammunition. Their actions saved lives. For his extraordinary gallantry Hitch was awarded the Victoria Cross the highest military honour.

His injuries forced his discharge from the army in 1879. Life was challenging. He struggled with his disability and a meager pension. He held various jobs before settling into driving a horse-drawn cab then a motor taxi. This provided a comfortable living for some time. A tragic fall led to the theft of his treasured Victoria Cross. While there are varying accounts it was later recovered.

Frederick Hitch died in 1913 at this very house 62 Cranbrook Road Chiswick. He is buried in St Nicholas churchyard Chiswick. His grave is more of a monument than a grave a fitting tribute to his heroism.

The memorial was funded by subscriptions a testament to his impact on the community. His story went even further. Proceeds from a screening of the world’s first all-colour feature film “The Miracle” contributed to the fund. London cabbies attended his funeral. Even today he is remembered through the Fred Hitch Gallantry Award for cab drivers. A truly remarkable man. This blue plaque ensures Frederick Hitch’s legacy endures.
