Perhaps surprisingly, this Rue Charles Michels wasn’t always known by that name. It gained its current name to honor a man of great conviction. The Rue Charles Michels stands as a testament to a life dedicated to activism.

Let’s take a moment to delve into the story of Charles Michels. He was born in Paris in 1903. His early life was marked by hardship. At just eleven years old, he began working in a shoe factory.

Michels became a trade unionist and communist militant. He was elected deputy for the 15th arrondissement of Paris in 1936. Even after the French Communist Party was dissolved in 1939, Michels remained active. He continued his work with the Confédération générale du travail unitaire.

In October 1940, Charles Michels was arrested. He was interned in several camps. In May 1941, he arrived at the Choisel camp in Châteaubriant.

Tragically, Charles Michels was executed on October 22, 1941. He was one of 48 hostages shot in retaliation for an attack on Karl Hotz. Hotz was the Feldkommandant of Nazi-occupied Nantes.

The former Place Beaugrenelle was renamed Place Charles-Michels in July 1945. This street, Rue Charles Michels, also carries his name as a tribute. The nearby Paris Métro station also bears his name. These dedications ensure his legacy lives on.

Charles Michels’ life was one of commitment. He stood up for his beliefs in the face of adversity. He was a union activist and political figure. He fought for the rights of workers. He stood against injustice.

Even in his final moments, Michels remained defiant. His courage in the face of death serves as an inspiration. The Rue Charles Michels is more than just a street. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and justice.

The story of Charles Michels is interwoven with the history of Paris. It reminds us of the struggles and sacrifices of the past.
