Perhaps a silent guardian stands here? Let’s talk about the 6-os főút 10-es kilométerkő. It marks a significant point on a vital route.
The 6-os főút 10-es kilométerkő is a kilometer stone. It sits on the 6-os főút. This main road stretches from Budapest to Barcs.
The 6-os főút connects Budapest with southern Hungary. It runs through several counties including Pest and Fejér. It also passes through Tolna Baranya and Somogy counties. The road goes along the Danube River. It then turns southwest. It crosses the eastern Mecsek region. Finally it continues across plains to Barcs. Here it reaches the Croatian border.
The entire 6-os főút is 262 kilometers long.
In 1934 a ministerial decree designated part of it as a primary road. This section ran from Budapest to Szekszárd. It was given the number 6. The road after Szekszárd used to follow the Danube south. It reached the border via Mohács. This section is now the 56-os főút.
The current route beyond Szekszárd was designated as a third-class main road in 1934. It had different numbers. These were 613 to Bonyhád 631 to Pécs and 643 to Barcs.
The 6-os főút’s route has changed little since. Some adjustments and bypasses have been added. The Dunaújváros bypass did not exist then. The road went through Dunapentele’s center. Part of the old route disappeared. It was lost to the construction of the Danube Iron Works.
The road cut through the Mecsek differently too. The old routes are now numbered 5613 and 6544. It also passed through Pécs Szentlőrinc and Szigetvár centers. Newer sections bypass these towns.
Near Szentlőrinc a railway overpass was added in 1970. This reduced accident risks. The old route had three railway crossings close together. The overpass eliminated all three. The bypassed sections became roads 5817 and 5811.
World War II changes did not greatly affect the 6-os főút. Sections in Baranya County did not get primary road status.
In Budapest the 6-os főút runs by the Budapest-Murakeresztúr railway. The Budafok and Tétény sections were developed from 1990 to 1998. This happened in several phases.
So as we stand by the 6-os főút 10-es kilométerkő. We recognize its place. It is part of a road with a long and evolving history. It has connected communities and shaped travel for decades.
