Have you ever noticed how places can hold stories? Buckhurst Hill, nestled in the heart of Epping Forest, is one such place. It’s a charming town with a rich history that whispers through its cobbled streets and verdant landscapes. Buckhurst Hill boasts a quaint and tranquil atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling metropolis of London just a short distance away. At the core of it all stands the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, its spire reaching for the heavens, a silent witness to the town’s evolution over centuries. It was built in 1838, a testament to the community’s spirit and faith. The church was originally a chapel of ease for the parish of Chigwell, as Buckhurst Hill wasn’t a separate ecclesiastical parish until 1867. This means residents had to trek to Chigwell to attend services before St. John was built. The story goes that they had to ford the River Roding to make their way there – how very inconvenient!

Buckhurst Hill’s transformation from a rural hamlet to a thriving town was accelerated by the arrival of the railway in 1856. Within a dozen years, six hundred new homes were built around the station, making it a desirable place to live for commuters working in London. St John’s National School was built adjacent to the church in 1867, funded by the church’s congregation. This illustrates the importance of education and community spirit in the town’s history. Today, the school is a bustling center of learning for the children of Buckhurst Hill.

As you stroll along the delightful streets of Buckhurst Hill, take in the glimpses of the past. The Victorian villas speak of a time of growth and aspiration. And the green spaces, protected by the Epping Forest Act of 1878, offer a reminder of the town’s natural heritage. Buckhurst Hill is indeed a unique blend of history, charm, and modern-day amenities. It is a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the vibrant energy of the present, making it a truly captivating town.
