Ready to dive into the story of the Takedayama Tunnel? This tunnel is more than just a passage. It’s a key part of Hiroshima’s infrastructure.

The Takedayama Tunnel is located in Hiroshima City. More specifically it is in Asaminami Ward. This tunnel is part of the Sanyo Expressway. You can find it on the E2 route. It was opened on December 7 1988.

Think about the engineering that went into this tunnel. The Takedayama Tunnel has an upward line that stretches 1840 meters. The downward line spans 1770 meters. It’s quite a feat of construction.

Imagine driving through the Takedayama Tunnel. The tunnel is located directly below a densely populated residential area. The earth covering ranges from 20 to 70 meters. This required careful construction.

During excavation the New Austrian Tunneling Method was used. This involved a top heading and bench excavation method. The drilling happened from both sides. The geology here is Hiroshima-type granite.

Have you ever experienced a traffic jam in a tunnel? The Takedayama Tunnel is known for this. Especially on the downward line drivers can unknowingly slow down. This can cause congestion during peak seasons.

In 2000 an incident occurred involving a hijacked bus. The bus was stopped inside the Takedayama Tunnel’s downward line. Male passengers were ordered off the bus.

Interestingly lane changes were once prohibited inside. This ban was lifted in 2022.

If you’re driving from Yamaguchi Prefecture you might spot something special. If luck is on your side you might see the Astramline. This new transport system crosses overhead. This happens when exiting the Takedayama Tunnel.
