A hubbub of voices, a symphony of slamming lockers. That’s the soundtrack of Balboa High School, or “Bal” as the locals affectionately call it. Right here on Cayuga Avenue, Bal has witnessed San Francisco’s transformation since 1928. Balboa High School isn’t just any school. Its motto, “First on the Pacific,” speaks to its pioneering spirit. Balboa High School holds the distinction of being the only historic landmark high school in the San Francisco Unified School District. It’s a legacy etched in Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a beautiful blend of design by architects like John Reid Jr., who also contributed to San Francisco City Hall.

Balboa High School has always been a reflection of its community, a place where working-class families and minority students have sought education. The school has seen its share of challenges. Periods of violence and controversy have tested its resilience, yet Bal has consistently risen to the occasion. In the face of the AIDS pandemic, Balboa High School demonstrated its forward-thinking nature by becoming the first school in California to distribute free condoms to students, a bold move in 1992. A decade earlier, in 1986, it housed the first school-based health clinic in California, the Balboa Teen Health Center, a testament to its commitment to student wellbeing.

The school has also experienced moments of unexpected cultural impact. Did you know the Bunny Hop dance craze was born right here at Balboa High School? In 1952, students invented this conga line variation, inspiring Ray Anthony’s hit song. From dance crazes to academic resurgence, Balboa High School has a story to tell. In 1996, the entire faculty was dismissed due to high turnover and low performance. This drastic measure paved the way for a remarkable transformation. Balboa High School became the first school in northern California to adopt the small learning communities concept, a “school within a school” model designed to improve academic performance.

This innovative approach, along with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, contributed to Balboa High School’s appearance on Newsweek’s “America’s Top Public High Schools” list in 2007 and 2008. Balboa High School, nestled near Balboa Park, isn’t just a school. It’s a microcosm of San Francisco. It’s a place where history, culture, and community converge. It’s a place where the echoes of the past meet the promise of the future. And it’s a place that continues to shape the lives of generations of San Franciscans.
