Let’s delve into the story of the Gyarmathy-kereszt. Gusztáv Gyarmathy a master butcher and his wife Teréz Lencsik erected this cross in 1930. They dedicated it to the Blessed Virgin Mary. They wanted it to serve for the salvation of souls.
Gyarmathy and his wife established a foundation of 100 pengős for its upkeep. They separated a small plot of land from their property. This plot measured about 7 square meters. They transferred it to the Gödöllő parish. On October 30 1930 the cross was consecrated.
Originally acacia trees stood at each of the four corners. Hedges grew between these trees. In 2005 the area underwent landscaping. A pavement was laid in front of the Gyarmathy-kereszt. During this work the acacia trees were cut down. The cross and its base needed renovation. Árpád Varga a stonemason carried out the restoration. The restored cross was returned to its original location in 2006. Its re-consecration took place in Easter 2006.
The inscription on the Gyarmathy-kereszt reads: “To the glory of God to the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the salvation of souls erected by Gusztáv Gyarmathy and his wife born Teréz Ilencsik 1930”.
