Born in Tarsus, St Theodore’s path to Canterbury is quite remarkable. St Theodore of Canterbury wasn’t English. He wasn’t even ordained when chosen as Archbishop.

This Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St Theodore, stands as a testament to faith. Its story is woven with threads of history, architecture, and devotion. The church’s history began long before this building. It reflects the growing Catholic community in Hampton.

In 1897, Michael Farmer created a chapel within his house. His son, Edmund, a priest, was granted permission to celebrate Mass there. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become St Theodore’s. By 1918, the space was expanded to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers.

As the congregation grew, so did the need for a dedicated church. In 1923, the diocese acquired Walnut Tree Cottage. Father Harold Burton, the first resident priest, established a chapel within the cottage. Daily Mass was held there, while Sunday Mass continued at the Avenue Road location.

A significant step was taken in 1927. A wood and asbestos building was erected on Station Road. This temporary structure served as the parish church for almost 60 years. Imagine services held within those walls, a community united in faith within this simple building.

Finally, in November 1986, a new church was completed. This church was dedicated to St Theodore of Canterbury. Cardinal Basil Hume, the Archbishop of Westminster, officially opened and consecrated it on March 22, 1987.

The architecture of St Theodore’s is noteworthy. Austin Winkley designed the church. Patrick Reyntiens created the stained-glass windows. David John crafted the wood sculptures. These artistic elements combine to create a space of beauty and reverence.

The life of St Theodore is inspiring. Born around 602, he became the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was known for his scholarship and organizational skills. St Theodore played a crucial role in the Church in England. He unified disparate elements from Rome, Gaul, and Ireland.

St Theodore was the first Archbishop of Canterbury willingly obeyed by all of Anglo-Saxon England.

Today, St Theodore’s Roman Catholic Church continues to be a vibrant center of faith. Mass is held regularly. Services take place on Saturday evenings, Sunday mornings, and Sunday evenings. Weekday masses are also offered. The community gathers to worship. It celebrates its shared beliefs within the walls of St Theodore’s.
