“Are you lost, dears?” a woman with a basket of mangoes asked, her voice thick with the lilting rhythm of Saint Lucian Creole. “You’re on the edge of Leslie Land.” Leslie Land. Even the name had a lyrical quality, I thought, like something out of a forgotten folk song. We were standing near a cluster of colorful, slightly ramshackle houses clinging to a hillside. Below us, the vibrant tapestry of Castries unfurled towards the harbor. Our guidebook mentioned Leslie Land in passing, a residential neighborhood with a history as colorful as the houses themselves. “This is where many of the workers from the port used to live,” our guide explained, her eyes crinkling at the corners with a mischievous smile. “Now, it’s a mix of families who’ve been here for generations and newcomers drawn by the area’s charm.” She pointed towards a sturdy concrete building, its exterior a faded pastel pink with bars on the windows. “That used to be a rum shop, a lively gathering place where stories flowed as freely as the local Piton beer.” As we ventured deeper into Leslie Land, the air buzzed with life. Children’s laughter echoed from courtyards, reggae beats pulsed from open windows, and the aroma of spices mingled with the salty tang of the nearby sea. We passed women braiding hair on stoops, old men playing dominoes under the shade of almond trees, and young couples stealing kisses in the fading light. Leslie Land, I realized, wasn’t just a neighborhood. It was a microcosm of Castries itself – a place where the past rubbed shoulders with the present, where hardship and joy were intertwined, and where the spirit of resilience pulsed with undeniable strength.
