Dreaming of horses? Stupferich might just whisper stories of its past into your ear. This high-altitude district of Karlsruhe, one of the mountain villages, sits about 100 meters above the city center. It offers a unique blend of history and nature.

Stupferich’s name hints at its origins. It likely served as a place for horse breeding. The name comes from “Stutpferrich,” meaning “mare paddock” in old High German. Reginbodo von Malsch founded this settlement. He bred horses here.

The first documented mention of Stupferich dates back to 1100. This reference appears in a copy of the Codex Hirsaugiensis. Stupferich celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2000. Imagine the stories this village could tell.

While you’re here, keep an eye out for the ghost of Burg Stupferich. An alleged castle once stood south of the village. Sadly, no evidence of it remains today. The local nobility might have lived there.

In 1972, Stupferich became part of Karlsruhe. This marked a new chapter in its long history. Yet, Stupferich retains its unique character.

Stupferich sits on the edge of the southern Kraichgau. Since January 2021, it is part of the Central/North Black Forest Nature Park. The surrounding landscape is beautiful. Explore the hills and forests around Stupferich.

Today, Stupferich offers a blend of rural charm and modern industry. Once mainly agricultural, it now hosts companies like abas Software GmbH and Vogelsitze GmbH. The headquarters of Physik Instrumente (PI) are located south of the A8.

Getting around is easy. Stupferich connects to the A8 motorway. Bus lines 23, 47 and 158 provide excellent public transport links. A bus comes every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays and every 20 minutes on evenings and Sundays.

Line 47 connects Stupferich to the Zündhütle tram stop and Karlsruhe Central Station. Bus line 23 goes to Durlach. Since 2017, bus line 158 has linked Stupferich to Langensteinbach.

Take a moment to appreciate Stupferich’s journey. From its horse-breeding roots to its integration into Karlsruhe, Stupferich has a rich heritage. It’s a place where history and nature meet.
