Was this peaceful oasis once in the path of destruction? You might not guess it, but Saint Mary’s Cemetery, right here before us, was once caught in a devastating tornado that tore through Chicago’s south side in 1967. Established in 1888 by the German Angel Guardian Orphanage Society, Saint Mary’s Cemetery stands as a tranquil giant, the largest cemetery serving the southern part of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Despite its serenity today, the 1967 tornado left its mark, stripping the grounds of many of its trees. Yet, the spirit of Saint Mary’s remained strong. The cemetery recovered, eventually becoming home to two Garden Crypt facilities, the newest of which opened in 1981. The cemetery even boasts a unique architectural marvel: the Interment Chapel, built in 1969. This chapel was designed in an “open style,” with striking faceted glass, a testament to the cemetery’s ability to embrace change while honoring tradition. Saint Mary’s Cemetery is a testament to resilience. It reminds us that even in the face of disaster, life, and remembrance can prevail.
