Imagine a place where art and faith converge. That’s the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. We stand before a building ensemble. It reflects mid-1950s architecture. The church’s consecration was in 1957. Kirchenbaumeister Stefan Leuer designed it. His architecture possesses authenticity even today.
The form language is contemporary. The materials are carefully chosen. The craftsmanship is remarkable. The arrangement of structures is horizontal. It interacts with the landscape. It links the settlement to the forest. Architect and nature create harmony. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche ensemble evokes a rural atmosphere.
Inside Heilig-Geist-Kirche, light dances through stained glass. Otto Lauterbach created these windows in 1959. They depict the descent of the Holy Spirit. This is shown upon the twelve apostles. Each apostle is rendered with unique detail.
One window shows the Apostle Thomas. Another displays Bartholomew. We see Andrew above Judas Thaddaeus. Then there’s Peter with Philip and Matthew. The Heilig-Geist symbol appears with Mary. It also features James the Younger. John and James the Elder are together. Simon Zelotes stands alone in another. Matthias completes the apostolic circle.
The altar wall displays this grand theme. Other windows feature free compositions. These include symbols of sacraments. Anointing of the Sick is represented. Olives, chrism, and a chalice are depicted. Symbols of Penance appear too. We see Decalogue tablets and crossed keys. A cross with a stole completes it.
Note the roof’s slope. Notice the rhythm of pillars and openings. They echo in nearby houses. The red brick connects everything visually. This strengthens the ensemble’s coherence.
The parish of Heilig-Geist is part of a community. It includes St. Barbara and St. Sebastian. These form the Bonn-Melbtal pastoral area. Together, they belong to the Pastoral Unit Bonn-Süd-West. This is within the city deanery of Bonn. The community focuses on faith. It also emphasizes community involvement.
The Heilig-Geist-Kirche choir adds to the spiritual experience. Eva Schüffelgen is the secretary. Bernd Kucera is the speaker. Their dedication enhances worship. It fosters a sense of belonging.
In 2011, plans considered expanding the parish center. The design sought to preserve and enhance the existing structures. It also aimed to integrate new buildings. The intention was to create a community space. This would link the church to its surroundings.
