Nestled amidst the rolling hills south of Dresden, the village of Goppeln awaits. It’s a place where history whispers through the rustling leaves and the echoes of artists still linger in the air. Goppeln’s story begins in 1286, a small agricultural village on the southern slopes of Dresden’s Elbe Valley. But Goppeln is more than just a picturesque village. It holds a unique place in art history. In the late 19th century, Goppeln transformed into a haven for artists. They formed a vibrant colony, drawn to the area’s natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. This group of young artists, specializing in plein air painting and Impressionism, became known as the “Goppeln School”. Their vibrant brushstrokes captured the essence of the landscape, forever linking Goppeln with the world of art. Even famed Brücke artists like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Pechstein briefly worked in Goppeln, adding to its artistic legacy. But Goppeln’s story doesn’t end with its artistic endeavors. In the 1920s, another chapter began with the arrival of the Nazareth Sisters of St. Francis. Mother Augustina Schumacher founded this Roman Catholic congregation. They established their motherhouse in Goppeln, adding a spiritual dimension to the village’s identity. During the GDR era, the sisters ran a children’s home within the complex. Later, in the 1990s, they transformed it into the Catholic nursing home, St. Clara. Today, this tranquil sanctuary offers a peaceful retreat for seniors. The convent also boasts a charming Kloster-Café, frequented by both the resident nuns and visitors. Goppeln also boasts a unique connection to a major historical event. In 1813, following the Battle of Dresden, Napoleon himself passed through Goppeln. Imagine the scene, the Emperor’s entourage winding through the quiet village streets, a moment of historical drama played out against the backdrop of rural tranquility. Goppeln has gracefully navigated the changing tides of time, from a simple agricultural village to an artistic hub and spiritual sanctuary. It remains a testament to the enduring power of community, art, and faith.
