Consider this Bethel Temple a phoenix risen from ashes. Bethel Temple, initially a mission by Quinn Chapel AME Church, started in 1862. It aimed to ease overcrowding. Union armies brought fleeing slaves over the Mississippi.
Bethel Temple’s first home was at Jackson and Van Buren streets. This location is now Chicago’s Financial Board of Trade. Bethel quickly grew and aided refugees. Despite fires, depressions, Black population shifts, and riots, Bethel Temple thrived. It moved fifteen times.
With strong members and leadership, Bethel Temple became a leading institution. It became known for civic and social justice. It also anchored the Black Liberation Movement.
Bethel Temple has occupied seventeen locations. This was from its beginning until 1949. In 1949, it moved to its current location on South Michigan Avenue. Despite its many relocations, Bethel Temple has always been important. It is a distinguished place in Chicago.
Every five years, Bethel Temple celebrates its legacy. It celebrates its service to Chicago. One celebration was held at the Garden Chalet Banquet Hall. This event was under Reverend Jennifer Tinsley’s leadership. Mrs. Theresa Stephens welcomed everyone. Reverend Dr. Emily Coleman-Edwards gave the invocation. Hope Lewis sang two solos. Timothy J. Edwards, II, performed spoken word. Stacy Letrice did a liturgical dance. A silent auction raised money for Bethel Temple’s outreach. A DJ played music.
Bishop Anne Henning Byfield preached at one anniversary. She is Reverend Tinsley’s mentor. Tinsley served on Bishop Byfield’s district.
Reverend Jennifer Tinsley said Bethel is proud. It is proud of its spiritual, ethical, political, and social impact. Members like Ida B. Wells and Lou Palmer contributed greatly. Bethel Temple founded the Wabash YMCA and Provident Hospital. It started political education forums and voter drives. These efforts led to Mayor Harold Washington’s election.
Bethel Temple asks neighbors and friends to join in celebration. Anyone interested in Black Chicago’s history is welcome. All who Bethel AME Church has touched over the years are invited. Bethel Temple continues to impact its community. It remains a beacon of hope and service.
