Hidden within Lyon’s vibrant 9th arrondissement, Lycée La Martinière Duchère stands as a testament to a unique legacy. Lycée La Martinière Duchère owes its existence to Claude Martin, a man who rose from humble beginnings to amass a vast fortune in India. Never returning to his hometown, Martin bequeathed a significant portion of his wealth to establish schools, one of which was to be in Lyon, bearing the name “La Martinière,” just like his other educational foundations in Calcutta and Lucknow. The first La Martinière in Lyon opened in the former Saint-Pierre Palace, then moved to the Augustins cloister in the Terreaux district. La Martinière Duchère wasn’t built until much later. It represents a modern chapter in the ongoing story of La Martinière in Lyon. Originally, La Martinière catered primarily to boys, focusing on practical subjects like mathematics, chemistry, and weaving theory. Decades later, a “Martinière-filles” was established, thanks in part to a generous donation from Madame de Cuzieu. This school initially focused on traditionally female vocations like dressmaking and sewing but eventually expanded to include commercial and scientific studies. Lycée La Martinière Duchère was inaugurated in its current location in 1963 by Christian Fouchet, then Minister of National Education. The modern buildings, with their panoramic views of the Saône and Fourvière, marked a new era for the institution. The school grew rapidly, necessitating further expansion in the 1980s. This growth was facilitated by the decentralization law of 1982, which placed the responsibility for school building construction and maintenance with the Rhône-Alpes Region. Today, Lycée La Martinière Duchère offers a comprehensive range of programs. It has evolved to meet modern demands. Biotechnologies and information technology now stand alongside traditional subjects, reflecting the changing economic landscape.
