Can you hear the echoes of history? We stand before Masjid Istiqlal Jakarta’s grand Independence Mosque. Istiqlal means independence in Arabic a fitting name for Indonesia’s national mosque. It is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. Its story is one of independence religious harmony and architectural brilliance.

The idea for this grand mosque arose after Indonesia declared independence in 1945. Wahid Hasyim Indonesia’s first minister for religious affairs envisioned a national mosque. Anwar Cokroaminoto later chairman of the Masjid Istiqlal Foundation championed this vision. President Sukarno embraced the idea. He supervised the mosque’s construction.

Did you know that a Christian architect designed this Islamic landmark? Friedrich Silaban a Protestant Christian won the design competition. Sukarno appointed him. Silaban’s design is a fusion of modern and traditional styles. It incorporates Indonesian Arabic and Indian influences.

Consider the location. Mohammad Hatta wanted it near residential areas. Sukarno insisted on a location near Merdeka Square. This aligned with Javanese tradition placing the king’s palace and grand mosque near the main city square. Sukarno also wanted it near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church. This symbolized religious tolerance.

Imagine the construction. Sukarno laid the foundation stone on August 24 1961. It took 17 years to complete. President Suharto inaugurated Masjid Istiqlal on February 22 1978.

The mosque has seven entrances. Each gate is named after one of the 99 names of Allah. The number seven represents the seven heavens in Islamic cosmology.

Look up at the dome. Its diameter is 45 meters symbolizing the 1945 Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. A stainless steel crescent and star adorn the dome. This is a symbol of Islam.

Inside the prayer hall can accommodate over 120000 worshippers. The main floor and four levels of balconies represent the Five Pillars of Islam. The interior design is minimalist. Stainless steel geometric ornaments add a modern touch.

Notice the single minaret. It stands 66.66 meters tall. This symbolizes the verses in the Quran. A 30-meter stainless steel pinnacle tops the minaret. This represents the 30 juz of the Quran.

Masjid Istiqlal stands for religious harmony. During Christian celebrations it provides parking for worshippers of Jakarta Cathedral. A tunnel called the Terowongan Silaturahmi connects Istiqlal Mosque and St Mary of the Assumption Cathedral.

Many prominent figures have visited this mosque. Barack Obama Bill Clinton and Angela Merkel are among them. In September 2024 Pope Francis stated that Istiqlal Mosque is concrete proof of religious moderation in Indonesia.

Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar has championed environmental initiatives. Solar panels slow-flow faucets and a water recycling system have been installed. The World Bank recognized it as the first green-certified place of worship.

Masjid Istiqlal is more than a mosque. It symbolizes Indonesia’s independence religious tolerance and architectural ingenuity. It stands as a beacon of unity and faith in the heart of Jakarta.
