Mooing cows serenaded us. We were anchored in Apuapu Bay. This tranquil bay on Ponui Island offered shelter from the strong easterly winds. Golden grassy hills surrounded us. Peninsulas were densely vegetated with native bush and pohutukawa trees.
Apuapu Bay is a small but beautiful anchorage. It’s part of the Hauraki Gulf near Waiheke Island. We found it appealing. It’s a low-key beauty.
Our boat was one of a few in the bay. Sailing yachts were there. Power boats anchored too close. Rich had to ask them to move. They did. It was a peaceful place. Even with the occasional cow on the beach.
The sunset was magnificent. The next morning felt like deep summer. Warm air filled the bay. Cicadas buzzed. But the weather changed. Strong wind gusts arrived. They lasted for two days. Rain came the second night. We were thankful for a secure anchorage.
The wind eventually shifted west. This gave us a chance to leave Apuapu Bay. Our next destination was Man o’War Bay on Waiheke Island. Apuapu Bay had been a memorable stay. We would remember the mooing cows. The stunning sunsets. The summery lulls between the strong gusts of wind. Apuapu Bay is a place of unexpected charm. A hidden gem in the Hauraki Gulf.
