It’s a place where nature and history meet. Right here in South Holland, you’ll find the Sand Ridge Nature Center. It sits on land that was once part of a much larger Lake Michigan, called Lake Chicago, which covered most of Cook County. When the ice age ended and this huge lake receded, it left behind beaches, sand dunes, and eventually, prairies and woodlands. The nature center tells the story of these ancient landscapes, offering a glimpse into what this area was like thousands of years ago. You can wander through the wooded trails, explore the demonstration gardens, or learn about the area’s Native American history. There are also four replica log cabins, which are based on the historic cabins at New Salem State Park in Petersburg, Illinois, where President Lincoln lived as a young man. They’re a reminder that this land has been home to people for centuries. You might even encounter birds of prey, snakes, turtles, and fish at the center. It’s a perfect place to escape the city for a peaceful walk, and learn about the natural world that surrounds us.
