“Ever heard of a town whose name is also a chemical shorthand?” That’s Budenheim. This municipality in Germany boasts a history stretching back to at least 778. It is a place where ancient roots meet modern industry.

Budenheim sits in the Mainz-Bingen district of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is only nine kilometers west of Mainz. The Rhine River flows to its north. The Lennebergwald forest borders its south and west.

Once upon a time, Budenheim was simply “Butenheim.” The Lorsch codex mentioned it in an undated listing. That was the town’s sole mention in that important historical record.

Today, Budenheim is known for more than just its past. It is the only municipality in its district. It stands alone without belonging to any association of municipalities.

The highest point in Budenheim is the Lenneberg. It rises to 176.8 meters. The Lennebergturm tower sits atop. It was dedicated in 1880. It belongs to a local hiking club.

Budenheim is also known for an incredible paleontological find. In 1911, they unearthed a rhinoceros fossil. This rhino lived about 20 million years ago. It is now displayed in Frankfurt’s Senckenberg Museum. A copy stands in Mainz’s Natural History Museum. The Budenheim Rhinoceros is a complete specimen. It stands 85 cm tall. It is a forerunner to the Sumatran Rhinoceros.

Budenheim has some interesting traditions. The Budenheim Flower Festival celebrates the blossoming season. Every year, on the last weekend in April, a Flower Queen is chosen. She and two Flower Princesses represent Budenheim for a year. The Budenheim Street Festival began in 1978. It marks the municipality’s 1,200-year jubilee. Local clubs stage this folk festival. It takes place over four days during the summer holidays. The Budenheim kermis celebrates the Catholic Saint Pancras’s Church. It dates back to 1747. It is held each year over the third weekend in September.

Budenheim’s economy is also noteworthy. The Chemische Fabrik Budenheim was founded in 1908. This chemical specialist employs around 850 people. The company’s name is shorthand for Budenheim in international communication.

Budenheim is well-connected. The Autobahn A 643 is only four kilometers away. Local trains stop in Budenheim. Travel time to Mainz’s main railway station is short. City buses also serve Budenheim.

Budenheim maintains partnerships with Eaubonne in France and Isola della Scala in Italy. It also has friendly relations with Wiesmoor in Lower Saxony.

Even Budenheim’s coat of arms tells a story. It features Saint Pancras. He is the town’s patron saint. The arms are based on a 16th-century village seal.

So, the next time you hear the name Budenheim, remember. It is more than just a place on a map. It is a town with a rich history, unique traditions, and a global presence.
