The remnants of its industrial past, like the former Industriewerke Karlsruhe munitions factory, have been ingeniously repurposed. Now, they house cultural gems such as the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, breathing new life into these historic structures. Südweststadt is bordered by Kriegsstraße and the central train station. These are the Östlicher Teil (Eastern Part), Mittlerer Teil (Middle Part), and Beiertheimer Feld. This division adds another layer to the Südweststadt’s rich tapestry. The story of Südweststadt begins in the mid-19th century. The area, once a part of Beiertheim, began its independent journey in 1860. This was marked by the arrival of industry and the start of construction. Just a few years later, in 1864, the Karlsruhe Zoo was established at the eastern edge of the burgeoning district. Today, Südweststadt is a testament to its dynamic past. It offers a unique blend of historical echoes and contemporary vibrancy.
