“Gedde,” they called the pike. That’s where the story of Gedevase Bro begins. For centuries, this spot was just a swampy mess. Crossing it was a challenge.

Gedevase Bro sits in Ganløse Ore’s eastern part. Once upon a time, traffic flowed closer to Farum Lake. But a “vase” changed everything. A vase is like a ramp through a swamp. Imagine locals tossing branches, soil, and stones into the muck. This created a somewhat solid path. People could finally cross the water, as if at a ford.

Later, Gedevase Bro replaced this vase. It became a bridge with a firm embankment. Yet, the old name stuck. Gedevase Bro. The name combines “Gede” from the pike and “vase” meaning ford.

Picture this in the 1780s. The respected priest Henrik Kampmann complained. He told the county official about the difficult road to Kirke Værløse. Kampmann also served as the priest there. So, stonecutter Martin Ulrich from Værløse built a proper stone bridge. But Kampmann wasn’t satisfied. He grumbled to Farumgård’s owner about the bad road through the forest. The road improved. It became the highway we know today.

Around 1830, a wider concrete bridge replaced the original Gedevase Bro. Gedevase Bro. The place name then inspired others. Gedevasegård sits atop the hill towards Farum. Also, the Gedevasevang Activity Center takes its name from the ancient ford.

Next time, as you cross Gedevase Bro, remember its humble beginnings. Think of the pike lurking in the water. Picture the swamp, the makeshift path, and the complaining priest. Gedevase Bro. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a story of ingenuity, persistence, and a little bit of grumbling that shaped the landscape.
