“Can you believe it? Argentina’s Iglesia del Nazareno started in someone’s dining room.” This unassuming beginning belies a century of faith. We are standing before a testament to passion and perseverance. This is the Iglesia del Nazareno.

In 1919, the Iglesia del Nazareno in Argentina began. Two missionary couples are central to this story. Francisco and Lula H. de Ferguson arrived in 1909. Carlos H. and Catalina Miller arrived in 1914. Both couples belonged to groups already linked to the Iglesia del Nazareno. They were passionate evangelists. They sacrificed much to share their faith.

The Millers opened their home for worship. September 3, 1919, marks the church’s opening. Their dining room became a sanctuary. It hosted public services and family prayer meetings.

By 1922, the church was growing. The second Assembly of the Argentine Missionary District reported progress. There were three missions. Three Sunday schools existed. The church had seven preaching locations. Printed materials played a crucial role. “La Senda Antigua” magazine spread the word. Later, it became “La Vía Más Excelente.”

Education was also a priority for the Iglesia del Nazareno. The Escuela Evangélica Mixta opened on Gaona Street in 1923. Twenty-five students enrolled. Carlos Miller provided theological education. His classes even served students from other denominations. They were welcome as regular students at the Instituto Bíblico Nazareno.

An important moment occurred in 1931. Dr. J.B. Chapman visited Argentina. He was the first General Superintendent of the Iglesia del Nazareno to do so. He ordained four licensed ministers as Presbyters. This is the highest ministerial distinction in the Iglesia del Nazareno. Two men and two women received this honor.

The Iglesia del Nazareno expanded over the following decades. It spread beyond Buenos Aires into the country’s interior.

The years between 1979 and 2004 were pivotal. The Iglesia del Nazareno worked to correct its course. It embraced a new approach to fulfill Christ’s gospel mission. The opening of the South American Region supported this work. So did visionary leadership.

Today, the Iglesia del Nazareno has 12 districts. It has 250 active churches. Its leadership is national. In 2019, the church celebrated its centennial. The celebration took place at the Bruno Radi Convention Center in Pilar, Buenos Aires.

Even a global pandemic could not stop them. The Iglesia del Nazareno adapted to new challenges. Leaders embraced new methods and tools. They continue to pursue their mission. That mission is to make disciples in all nations. This is based on Acts 1:8. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses.”

The Seminario Nazareno Buenos Aires SENBA also contributes to the Iglesia del Nazareno. It has trained ministers since 1940. SENBA offers theological studies in two formats. These formats are virtual and in person. The in-person classes are held at the central headquarters. It is located on Terrero 950, CABA.

The Iglesia del Nazareno has come a long way. It started in a dining room. It grew into a nationwide movement. Its commitment to faith and service remains strong. As you continue your journey, remember the Iglesia del Nazareno. It is a symbol of unwavering dedication.
