The Kementerian Dalam Negeri or Kemendagri as it’s known. It has a long and fascinating history. Its origins trace back to the Dutch East Indies. It was then known as the Departement van Binnenlands Bestuur. Its duties were overseeing the police. It also dealt with transmigration and agrarian matters. This continued until the Japanese occupation in 1942.

Under Japanese rule it became the Naimubu. Its responsibilities expanded significantly. It now included religious social health education and cultural matters. The Naimubu remained at Jalan Sagara No 7. This was until 1945 and the proclamation of Indonesian independence.

Following independence on August 19 1945. The Naimubu was divided into several departments. One of these was the Department of Home Affairs. This would eventually become the ministry we see today. This new Department was the first government department established under Indonesia’s Presidential Cabinet. Its name changed several times reflecting shifts in the political landscape and constitution.

In 2010 the nomenclature changed. The Department of Home Affairs became the Ministry of Home Affairs. This was in accordance with a Ministerial regulation. The change reflected a broader shift in governmental structure.

The Kementerian Dalam Negeri’s importance cannot be overstated. It is explicitly mentioned in the Indonesian constitution alongside the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs.
