Step into Himmerigskov a forest unlike any other. Imagine a landscape born not of ancient time but of recent planting. Himmerigskov near Sostften Hinnerup and Trige practically sits in Favrskov Kommune. Yet it is considered one of Aarhus’s newer forests.
This magnificent woodland covering approximately 140 hectares was largely planted between 1993 and 1995. The forest continues to grow. New trees were added as recently as 2017 and 2018. Another planting is planned north of the existing forest. The idea for Himmerigskov came from Aarhus Kommune’s 1988 plan. However it is a state forest. The former Skov- og Naturstyrelse now Naturstyrelsen planted it. The state manages Himmerigskov.
Himmerigskov’s name originates from Himmeriggaarden. This old farmstead sits in the heart of the oldest part of the forest. Oaks and beeches dominate Himmerigskov’s tree population. Many other native Danish deciduous trees grow here. These include lime trees and cherry trees. Wet areas feature alder and ash trees. Fruit trees add variety. They provide a tasty treat for both visitors and animals. Thorny shrubs offer shelter for birds and animals during winter months when deciduous trees lose their leaves. The forest edges boast bushes and smaller trees like blackthorn hazel and hawthorn. They create a lovely transition from the open landscape. These edges also protect the trees from wind and drying. They provide food and shelter for animals living both in the forest and in nearby fields.
During the forest’s creation some houses were demolished. Interestingly the gardens’ trees and plants were left intact. This accounts for the unusual variety of plants. For example syringa and other garden bushes and fruit trees can be found amongst the more common forest species. Because Himmerigskov is far from other forests its forest floor flora is developing slowly. Plants from surrounding fields such as common tansy field milkwort and cornflower are still prominent. However some forest plants like goat willow are now starting to take hold.
Holmkaergroft and Ronbaek streams almost divide the forest into northern and southern sections. Open areas along these waterways are preserved. Meadows grow here. These meadows support typical meadow flowers. These include cowslip marsh marigold and buttercup. Hopefully these flowers will continue to spread. The meadows also provide habitats for insects and food for the forest animals. Kestrels hunt mice and other small creatures in the meadows. After Himmerigskov’s creation animals typical of open land dominated the area. These included hares pheasants and partridges. However genuine forest animals have arrived. These include numerous roe deer foxes which make dens in ditches and banks and squirrels. The birdlife has also changed. Song thrushes leaf warblers and jays are now common. However birds that need holes for nests like tits and redstarts are still rare. This is because there aren’t many old trees with suitable nesting places.
Hjuls lake is situated at the southwest edge. There is free fishing for carp in the northern two-thirds. Himmerigskov’s isolation makes it perfect for seed production. Part of the forest is used to produce seeds from Norway spruce noble fir and larch. Naturstyrelsen manages hunting in Himmerigskov. They organize both training hunts and club hunts. Lastly Himmeriggaarden an abandoned farmstead is now a scout hut. It is operated by the ‘Gallerne’ scout group. It is owned by Naturstyrelsen Sohojlandet formerly the Silkeborg State Forestry District. During the creation of Himmerigskov some outbuildings were demolished. Most of the buildings remain though. The scouts aim to provide children and young people with outdoor experiences. Himmeriggaarden is available for rent when not in use by the scouts. Himmerigskov offers a unique combination of planned and natural growth. It is a testament to nature’s resilience and human vision. This forest is a place of beauty peace and unexpected discoveries.
