Ever wondered where Leipzig’s creative heart beats? Here at Werk 2, the Kulturfabrik Leipzig, history meets vibrant modern culture. Werk 2 stands as a testament to Leipzig’s industrial past and its thriving present.

The story of Werk 2 begins in 1848. It started as a gas knife factory. Over the years, different engineering companies took over. In 1992, after industrial work stopped, the association “Werk 2 – Kulturfabrik Leipzig” stepped in. They transformed the space into a socio-cultural center.

Today, Werk 2 is a hub for workshops and studios. You will find ceramics, glass blowing and graphic printing here. It is also home to the Senior Citizens Computer Club. The “Society for International Understanding” also resides here. Café ConnStanze, the Graffitiverein and the BetterRun Mad Flava Ink Store add to its diverse community.

Werk 2 regularly hosts concerts, parties and art events. The Leipziger Cammerspiele uses it as a venue. The annual Wave Gotik Treffen and the Pop Up Musikmesse are also held here. The entire site is like a large urban art gallery. Countless graffiti and street art works adorn the walls.

In 1886, Halle A was built. This three-aisled industrial hall provided space for expansion. Additional buildings and a small hall, Halle D, were added over time. During 1942 and 1943, Werk 2 served as a forced labor camp. In 1952, it became part of VEB Werkstoffprüfmaschinen. It was then known as “WERK II”.

After production ceased in 1990, ideas for cultural use emerged. The Leipziger Kulturzentrum Connewitzer Kreuz e.V. was founded in 1992. It is now known as WERK 2 – Kulturfabrik Leipzig e.V.. It is the largest socio-cultural center in Saxony.

In 1996, the city of Leipzig bought the property. The goal was to continue its use as a socio-cultural center. Extensive construction began to create a 1000 square meter event hall, Halle A. Halle D was rebuilt and reopened in September 2010.

Werk 2 inspires children and young people. It offers many creative workshops and events. Roller discos, theater performances and carnival parties take place here. Even linocut printing inspires young visitors. The two halls offer enough space for special events.

WERK 2 impresses with its 19th-century industrial charm. The fully renovated event hall is versatile. It regularly hosts concerts, workshops, and markets. Four clubs under one roof ensure diversity and culture at Werk 2.

So, as you stand here, remember the layers of history and creativity that make Werk 2 so unique. From its industrial roots to its current role as a cultural beacon, Werk 2 embodies the spirit of Leipzig. It is a place where the past and present merge into a vibrant, ever-evolving story.
