Dream of serenity. Here before us stands Masjid Fathurrahmaan. It offers Jakarta residents a place for peaceful reflection. Though perhaps not as widely known as the Istiqlal Mosque, Masjid Fathurrahmaan provides a unique spiritual experience.

Istiqlal Mosque is Indonesia’s national mosque. Its name means independence in Arabic. It symbolizes Indonesia’s freedom. Istiqlal Mosque is Southeast Asia’s largest mosque. It can hold 200000 worshippers. The idea for Istiqlal arose after Indonesia’s independence in 1945.

Indonesia’s first Minister for Religious Affairs Wahid Hasyim proposed it. Anwar Cokroaminoto chaired the Istiqlal Mosque Foundation. Sukarno supervised construction. Friedrich Silaban designed Istiqlal. He won a design competition. He was the son of a Lutheran pastor.

Sukarno wanted the mosque near Merdeka Square. This mirrored Javanese tradition. Royal palaces and grand mosques faced city squares. Sukarno also wanted it near Jakarta Cathedral and Immanuel Church. This symbolized religious harmony.

The foundation stone was laid in 1961. Construction lasted 17 years. President Suharto opened Istiqlal in 1978. Istiqlal has seven entrances. They are named after Allah’s names. The seven gates symbolize the Seven Heavens. Ablution fountains are on the ground floor. The prayer hall is on the first floor.

Istiqlal’s main prayer hall features a 45-meter dome. The number represents Indonesia’s 1945 independence declaration. Twelve columns support the dome. They signify the Prophet Muhammad’s birth date.

The main floor and four balconies represent the Five Pillars of Islam. They also stand for Pancasila. The interior design is minimalist. Stainless steel geometric ornaments adorn the space. A tunnel connects Istiqlal Mosque to St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral. It is called the Tunnel of Friendship. It symbolizes religious tolerance.

Istiqlal’s minaret is 66.66 meters tall. It symbolizes the Quran’s verses. A 30-meter pinnacle tops the minaret. It represents the Quran’s 30 juz. Some Indonesian Muslims found Istiqlal’s design too modern. They preferred Javanese triple-roofed designs.

Istiqlal Mosque has hosted many important visitors. These include Barack Obama and King Salman of Saudi Arabia. During Christian holidays Istiqlal provides parking for Jakarta Cathedral worshippers.

Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar has made Istiqlal more environmentally friendly. Solar panels and water recycling are now in use. The World Bank recognized it as a green place of worship. Istiqlal Mosque remains an important symbol. It showcases Indonesia’s independence. It highlights religious harmony. It stands as a place of profound spiritual significance.
