Hear that? That’s the sound of Singapore’s natural heritage calling you to Windsor Nature Park. This isn’t just another park. Windsor Nature Park is a green sanctuary. It acts as a vital buffer. It separates the Central Catchment Nature Reserve from the city.

Windsor Nature Park officially opened in 2017. But its story began long before. Imagine this area as a rubber plantation. That was the case up until the 1970s. Kampong villages and an aquatic plant farm dotted the landscape. Today, nature has reclaimed much of the land.

The planning of Windsor Nature Park had clear goals. First, it protects the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Second, it creates recreational opportunities. Finally, it promotes appreciation for Singapore’s natural heritage.

As you stroll through Windsor Nature Park, you may notice its diverse habitats. Freshwater streams flow gently. Secondary forests thrive. Remnants of old plantations tell tales of the past. These freshwater streams are rare in Singapore. They provide refuge for native flora and fauna.

Keep an eye out for the Two-Spot Barb in the streams. These juvenile fish have distinctive spots that fade as they mature. Look closer and you might spot the Pygmy Halfbeak. Its lower jaw extends further than its upper jaw. This helps it feed from the water’s surface.

You might also see Cryptocoryne griffithii. This endangered aquatic plant is also known as Keladi Paya in Malay. That means swamp taro. It thrives in soft and acidic waters.

Moving into the secondary forest, listen for the calls of birds. The Greater Racket-Tailed Drongo lives here. This bird is easily identified by its long tail feathers. Lucky visitors might even spot a Red Junglefowl foraging. Also, Windsor Nature Park is home to mammals. The endangered Sunda pangolin lives here. A group of Raffles’ banded langur monkeys also calls Windsor Nature Park home.

Take note of the plants along the trails. The red flowers of Leea rubra attract insects. The aquatic ginger blooms near the water’s edge. The Leea rubra was once thought to be extinct. But it has been replanted in parks like this one.

Windsor Nature Park spans 75 hectares. It features about 4km of trails. The Hanguana Trail is wheelchair-friendly. The Squirrel and Drongo Trail is lush and scenic. The Venus Loop connects to MacRitchie Reservoir.

Before you leave, remember the purpose of this park. Windsor Nature Park protects biodiversity. It provides recreation. It is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to nature. Windsor Nature Park is an all-in-one pitstop for biodiversity in Singapore.
