Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph

Gazing up at the Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph, have you ever wondered about its unique history? This neo-Romanesque marvel, nestled between France and Monaco, is a testament to architectural ambition and artistic flair. The Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph, inaugurated in 1923, holds a special distinction. It is the only sanctuary dedicated to Saint Joseph in the entire Alpes-Maritimes department. The architect, Paul Lajoie, drew inspiration from the Romanesque style of the Middle Ages. He envisioned a structure of elegant simplicity and striking beauty. The church, built in the shape of a Latin cross, adheres to the tradition of orienting the apse eastward. This is because the apse, as the first part of the church to be illuminated by the morning sun, symbolizes the resurrection of Christ. Interestingly, the exterior apse of the Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph remains flat. Originally intended to be a semi-circular apse, it stands as a silent testament to unfinished plans. Another intriguing detail lies in the unusually short transept arms, a unique feature of this sanctuary. Above the crossing rises a lantern tower, a beacon of light. The original design placed the bell tower above the first bay of the nave, behind the porch. This ambitious plan envisioned a 70-meter high bell tower, surpassing even the height of Saint-Charles Church in Monaco. Constructed from the same La Turbie stone as Monaco’s cathedral, the Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph stretches approximately 55 meters long. The central nave, flanked by two 4-meter wide aisles, measures 8 meters wide and 12 meters high. Above the transept crossing, the dome soars 18 meters above the ground. The Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph also boasts a rich history of stained glass. Around 1930, Art Deco style windows by SA Maumejean Frères were installed on either side of the nave’s first bay. The second bay on the right features three stained glass windows by Charles Champigneulle, a renowned figure in the Art Nouveau stained glass movement. In the early 1970s, the local artist Favarel completed the church’s stained glass collection with his distinctly modern designs. These vibrant windows flood the Sanctuaire Saint-Joseph with light, adding another layer of beauty to this remarkable sanctuary.
