“This street seems familiar,” he mumbled, more to himself than anyone else. A quiet street, Rue Germain Nouveau, tucked away from the grand boulevards of Paris. Don’t let its peaceful demeanor fool you. This street holds a story, a story of a poet whose life was a whirlwind of brilliance and torment. Germain Nouveau, born in a small village in 1851, found himself drawn to the allure of Paris in 1872. Here, he crossed paths with literary giants like Mallarmé and Richepin, immersing himself in the bohemian world of the “Zutistes”. He even embarked on a journey to London with the enigmatic Arthur Rimbaud, a journey that would leave its mark on literary history. Nouveau’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of creativity and instability. He experienced moments of “mystic madness,” leading to periods of hospitalization. His soul, much like that of his contemporary, Rimbaud, seemed to wander, seeking solace in the life of a vagabond. Despite his poetic talent, recognized by figures like Aragon who deemed him Rimbaud’s equal, Nouveau resisted the allure of publication during his lifetime. His verses, imbued with a rawness that resonated with the Surrealists, were mostly shared with the world posthumously. In 1911, as if drawn back to his origins, Nouveau returned to his birthplace. He died there in 1920, his life a testament to the volatile nature of genius, a flame that burned bright but flickered too soon.
