Completed in 1967, Balfron Tower stands as a striking example of Brutalist architecture. It dominates the London skyline. This imposing concrete structure, part of the Brownfield Estate in Poplar, was designed by Ernő Goldfinger. Goldfinger, known for his bold and often controversial designs, envisioned Balfron Tower as a modern, utopian living space. He even lived in flat 130 on the 25th floor for two months in 1968. He wanted to experience life in his creation firsthand. He hosted champagne parties for residents. This was his way of gathering feedback to refine his designs. He later applied these lessons to his even more famous creation, Trellick Tower. Balfron Tower isn’t just a residential building. It’s a testament to a particular era of architectural thinking. Its separate service tower, connected to the main block by elevated walkways, was a novel concept at the time. These walkways serve every third floor, creating a unique pattern of movement within the building. Imagine taking the lift to the 12th floor to reach your flat on the 11th! This unconventional design element adds to the tower’s distinctive character. Despite initial aspirations, the tower faced challenges. By 2011, a full refurbishment was underway, led by architectural firm PRP. They aimed to preserve Goldfinger’s original vision while updating the building to modern standards. This delicate balance proved challenging due to the building’s listed status and the need to install new services without altering its exterior. Today, Balfron Tower stands as a reminder of the complexities of urban planning and social housing ideals. It also serves as a unique landmark in London’s ever-evolving cityscape.
