The imposing brick facade of Saint Patrick Catholic Church stands tall, a testament to the enduring faith of generations. Its story begins in 1846, a time when Irish immigrants settled in Chicago seeking a new life. Saint Patrick Catholic Church, also known as Old St. Pat’s, was founded as the first English-speaking Catholic church in the city. The original wooden structure stood at a different location but was moved to its present address in 1853. A new brick building was constructed in the Romanesque style and dedicated on Christmas Day in 1856. Saint Patrick Catholic Church is one of the few buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This makes it the oldest public building in Chicago. The church escaped the conflagration miraculously, as the fire started a few blocks south and was driven by strong winds from the southwest.
Though the exterior might seem plain, the interior is a haven of captivating beauty. The intricate Celtic-inspired stained-glass windows, designed and installed by Thomas A. O’Shaughnessy, are the main attraction. He meticulously crafted these windows between 1912 and 1922, inspired by the famous Book of Kells in Ireland. These windows are a magnificent showcase of the Celtic Revival movement, captivating visitors with their detailed patterns and delicate hues. O’Shaughnessy also included mosaic tiling and decorative motifs, further enhancing the church’s aesthetic. It was a labor of love, as he was paid a modest salary, driven solely by his passion for art and faith. The church’s interior is truly a treasure. The stunning stained-glass windows, the delicate mosaic, the intricate Celtic designs, and the overall grandeur create an atmosphere of peace and reverence. Today, Saint Patrick Catholic Church stands as an enduring symbol of faith and culture, welcoming all who seek solace and inspiration.
