Why is Muirhouse such a fascinating name for a housing estate? You see, the name Muirhouse is a journey through time. It takes us back to a grand mansion built on the misty edges of Wardie Muir. Muirhouse, a name steeped in history, first appears on maps as early as 1610. Imagine a magnificent estate. This estate, known as Muirhouse (Moore Huse) in its early days, was a testament to Edinburgh’s rich past. The estate passed through the hands of prominent figures, leaving their mark on its legacy. In 1794, it was bequeathed to Rev. Thomas Randall, a figure of authority at St Giles Cathedral. Years later, in 1832, a second Muirhouse Mansion rose on the landscape, designed by the renowned architects R & R Dickson. Commissioned by the wealthy Davidson family, merchants who plied their trade in distant Rotterdam, this new mansion further cemented Muirhouse’s place in Edinburgh’s story. The original Muirhouse, however, succumbed to time, with its last remnants, known as Muirhouse Towers, disappearing in the 1960s. Today, Muirhouse might be a housing estate, but its name whispers tales of grand mansions and a bygone era.
