On a crisp morning in 1977, the tranquility of Tanjung Kupang Mountain was shattered. A tragedy unfolded in the skies above, forever etching the name Tanjung Kupang into the annals of history. Malaysian Airline System Flight 653, en route from Penang to Singapore, became a victim of a hijacking. Its final moments were marked by a fiery crash near Kampong Ladang, a stone’s throw from Tanjung Kupang Mountain. The disaster claimed the lives of all 100 souls on board – 93 passengers and 7 crew members. The impact was so devastating that no recognizable bodies were recovered. The remains of the victims were laid to rest in a collective grave, now known as the Tanjung Kupang Memorial, located on Jalan Kebun Teh. Tanjung Kupang Mountain stands as a silent witness to this tragic event. Beyond the somber memory of the air crash, Tanjung Kupang is also linked to a remarkable feat of engineering: the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link. This 1.9-kilometer bridge connects Tanjung Kupang in Johor, Malaysia, to Tuas in Singapore. Opened in 1998, it serves as a vital artery between the two nations, alleviating traffic congestion on the older Johor-Singapore Causeway. The Second Link, a twin-deck marvel, accommodates a dual-three lane carriageway and stretches an impressive 1,920 meters over the water. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and connectivity, a stark contrast to the tragic event that once scarred Tanjung Kupang Mountain.
