Clutching a flickering lantern, a lone figure hurried down rue Saint-Fargeau. He pounded on the doors of Centre de secours Ménilmontant. “Fire! The Opera Comique!”, he gasped. This tragic night in 1887 became a turning point for the Centre de secours Ménilmontant and fire safety in Paris. The blaze, sparked by a gas jet, ripped through the crowded theatre, claiming 115 lives. The narrow exits and ensuing panic exacerbated the disaster. The firemen of Centre de secours Ménilmontant fought valiantly for three hours. However, the inferno left an indelible mark. This tragedy prompted a city-wide mandate for electric lighting in theatres, a direct consequence of the Opera Comique’s destruction and the heroic efforts of Centre de secours Ménilmontant. Centre de secours Ménilmontant, established as part of the Bataillon des Sapeurs Pompiers de Paris in 1811, has witnessed and responded to numerous calamities. The firemen here, under the authority of the Paris police prefect, have served as both lifesavers and military personnel. Their motto, “Sauver ou Périr” (“Save or Perish”), encapsulates their dedication. The firemen of Centre de secours Ménilmontant faced another harrowing challenge during the devastating fire at the Bazar de la Charité in 1897. The makeshift structure, adorned with flammable materials, became a death trap when a cinematographe’s ether-powered lamp ignited the building. Over 140 people, primarily women and children, perished. Once again, the Centre de secours Ménilmontant’s firefighters bravely pulled survivors from the inferno. Even the Paris Métro wasn’t immune to disaster. In 1903, a short circuit near the Barbès station caused a fire that eventually spread to a train at Ménilmontant. Tragically, 84 lives were lost in the ensuing chaos and smoke at the Couronnes station. Centre de secours Ménilmontant’s firemen discovered the grim scene, a stark reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the city. These tragedies, witnessed by the Centre de secours Ménilmontant, highlight the evolution of fire safety in Paris. From horse-drawn carriages to modern fire trucks, from simple buckets to high-tech equipment, the Centre de secours Ménilmontant has adapted and persevered. Their unwavering commitment to “Sauver ou Périr” has protected Paris for over two centuries.
