Musholla Baitul Huda, a place of peace and prayer, had become the scene of an attempted attack. The small mosque, nestled in the Batu Ampar neighborhood of Kramatjati, East Jakarta, usually hummed with the gentle murmur of prayers. But on that Friday evening, the tranquility was shattered. Lazuardy Firdaus, the imam, had just finished leading Isha prayers. He was about to begin his sunnah prayers when he stepped out of the Musholla. As he approached his motorbike, a young man, identified as MMA, suddenly appeared. He lunged at Lazuardy, brandishing a kitchen knife. Thankfully, Lazuardy reacted quickly. He deflected the blade, sending the knife clattering to the ground. The sudden attack caused him to fall, his motorbike tumbling on top of him. The commotion alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene. They found Lazuardy pinned beneath his bike, the would-be assailant standing frozen nearby. One neighbor secured MMA while another helped the imam up. Surprisingly, MMA confessed his motive. He was bothered by the sound of zikir emanating from Musholla Baitul Huda. He had recently moved into a rented room in the area and the sounds of prayer irritated him. Within minutes, members of the local Babinsa, who happened to be nearby for a Maulid Nabi celebration, arrived and escorted MMA to the Kramat Jati Police Station. The incident left the community shaken. Musholla Baitul Huda, a sanctuary of devotion, had been violated. Yet, amidst the fear and uncertainty, the community’s faith remained unshaken. They continued to gather at the Musholla, their prayers now carrying a renewed sense of resilience. The incident at Musholla Baitul Huda serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by communities in maintaining peace and tolerance.
