Engines once roared where birds now sing. Here at the Mus\u00e9e technique des Poudres de l’Armement Ren\u00e9 Amiable, we stand on hallowed ground. This is the site of the former Poudrerie Nationale. It was a place where gunpowder shaped destinies.
The Mus\u00e9e technique des Poudres de l’Armement Ren\u00e9 Amiable preserves the memory of the Poudrerie. It honors the men who advanced science in this field. Names like Dautriche, Maurel, Vieille and Burlot resonate here.
Imagine Napoleon III in 1865. He decreed the creation of the Poudrerie Imp\u00e9riale. The location was chosen for its proximity to the Canal de l’Ourcq. It also had a railway line. It was far enough from Sevran and Livry-Gargan.
Gustave Maurouard was the engineer. He revolutionized the site. He installed steam engines. This made it the first French powder mill to use steam power.
Step back in time to World War I. Over 3,000 people worked here. They produced up to 28 tons of powder daily. The Poudrerie was crucial to the war effort. During World War II, production peaked in May 1940 at 500 tons.
The Germans occupied the factory. They stripped it of its machinery. The plant continued operating until 1973.
After its closure Val\u00e9ry Giscard d’Estaing decided to convert it into a park. The Office National des For\u00eats was responsible for managing it. Many buildings were destroyed. The park opened to the public in 1977.
The Mus\u00e9e technique des Poudres de l’Armement Ren\u00e9 Amiable opened in 1982. Ren\u00e9 Amiable was the last director of the industrial site. He founded the association “Les Amis du Parc Forestier de la Poudrerie”.
The Mus\u00e9e technique des Poudres de l’Armement Ren\u00e9 Amiable has thirteen exhibition rooms. They display the history of gunpowder production. You will see the lives of the men and women who worked here.
Look around at the remaining buildings. They stand as witnesses to this unique factory. A factory powered by steam. Maurouard implemented this system.
The park also features earth mounds called merlons. They were placed between production units. This prevented fire from spreading.
