Here stands Apelstein 6 a silent sentinel. It’s one of fifty such stones. These Apelsteine mark the positions of armies during the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. This specific stone Apelstein 6 tells a story. A story of the Battle of Wachau. It was fought on October 16 1813.

The inscription on Apelstein 6 is clear. It names Prince Gortschakoff. His army numbered 9000 men. The stone commemorates their presence here during that brutal battle. The Battle of Leipzig also known as the Battle of the Nations was immense. It involved almost 600000 soldiers. This made it the largest battle in Europe before World War I.

Theodor Apel a Leipzig citizen and writer initiated this project. Between 1861 and 1864 he erected 44 of these markers. Six more including Apelstein 6 followed. They were funded through private donations or by associations and foundations. Apel’s goal was to create a lasting memorial. A memorial to those who fought and died here. A memorial that would stand as a stark reminder of this pivotal battle.

Imagine the scene. The ground trembles under the weight of marching soldiers. The air is thick with smoke. The cries of the wounded and dying echo through the battlefield. This area was the site of intense conflict. Apelstein 6 stood as a silent witness. A witness to the chaos and destruction.

The Battle of Leipzig resulted in a decisive victory for the coalition. However victory came at a terrible cost. Tens of thousands of soldiers perished. The sheer number of casualties led to outbreaks of typhus and cholera. These diseases spread rapidly through Germany and beyond. The consequences of this battle reverberated across Europe for years to come.
