Journey back to 775. Imagine a world before Vellmar was even called Vellmar. The Hersfeld Abbey’s records, the “Breviarium sancti Lulli”, mention a place called “Filmare”. This is the first documented whisper of Niedervellmar’s existence. Niedervellmar, nestled within modern-day Vellmar, Germany, holds this ancient history within its streets. Over time, “Filmare” transformed. The name shifted, evolving into the Niedervellmar we know today. By 1107, both “Filmare” and “Vilmar” appear in records. This shows the transition of the name. Niedervellmar, along with Obervellmar and Frommershausen, became part of the larger town of Vellmar. Vellmar itself didn’t achieve city status until 1975, a testament to the long history of these combined districts. Niedervellmar wasn’t untouched by hardship. During the Thirty Years’ War, Tilly’s soldiers brought chaos and destruction. Later, during the Seven Years’ War, French troops besieged the area, adding another layer of hardship to Niedervellmar’s story. A fascinating piece of Niedervellmar’s past lies in the American Revolutionary War. Thirty men from Niedervellmar, along with others from Obervellmar and Frommershausen, fought in this conflict. Johannes Räuber, a day laborer from Niedervellmar, kept a diary during this time. His writings offer a unique window into the experiences of a common man caught in extraordinary circumstances. Niedervellmar, a quiet district now, echoes with these stories of conflict, resilience, and a name that whispered into existence over a millennium ago.
