Dedicated in 1940, the story of Parroquia Santa Elisa begins before its physical construction. Parroquia Santa Elisa stands on Salta 2290 in Buenos Aires. Its canonical erection occurred on July 25 1938. Before Parroquia Santa Elisa existed its parishioners belonged to Santa Lucía San Cristobal and San Antonio.

Imagine the Barracas neighborhood nearly a century ago. The faithful had to travel to other parishes. The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires recognized the need for a local church. Thus Parroquia Santa Elisa was born.

The church itself was built in 1939. It was blessed the following year in 1940. This marked a new chapter for the community. They now had a spiritual home to call their own.

Parroquia Santa Elisa is more than just a building. It is a place of community. A priest named Toto served at Parroquia Santa Elisa between 2005 and 2011. He tried to be present in public spaces beyond the church itself. He set up a missionary tent in Plaza Constitución. This brought the church to the people.

Cardinal Bergoglio encouraged Toto. He told him to make a mess. He believed the church should be with the people. The annual Mass against Trafficking began to be held in Plaza Constitución. This showed the church’s commitment to social issues.

Toto later opened Hogar de Cristo in the square. This provided help for those struggling with drug addiction. Parroquia Santa Elisa became a center for the vulnerable. The church also commemorated Mauricio Silva a priest who disappeared in 1977. A Mass was held each year in his memory.

Today Parroquia Santa Elisa continues its mission. It stands as a symbol of faith and community. It provides spiritual guidance. It offers support to those in need.

The history of Parroquia Santa Elisa is intertwined with the history of Buenos Aires. It reflects the city’s growth. It also mirrors its social concerns. The church remains a vital part of the Barracas neighborhood. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith.

As you stand before Parroquia Santa Elisa remember its past. Think about the people who built it. Consider those who have found solace within its walls. Parroquia Santa Elisa is a living story. It is a story of faith hope and community. A story that continues to unfold.
