Interestingly enough, Place Gensoul sits in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement. It is a place within the Perrache quarter. This square sits near the Perrache train station. It is bordered by Cours de Verdun to the south. The Quai Maréchal-Joffre defines its western edge.

Rue Général-Plessier starts at Place Gensoul. Rue Vaubecour ends there. Created after the Perrache company’s development, the area pushed the confluence further south. The square expanded after acquiring Mademoiselle Dardel’s lime kiln.

Initially, it bore the name Place Suchet. Another location in Brotteaux shared the name. To avoid confusion, it was renamed Place Gensoul in 1866. The new name honored Joseph Ferdinand Gensoul. He invented a steam-powered device. It aided silk cocoon spinning. His son, Joseph Gensoul, also earned recognition. He served as a surgeon. Later, he became a professor at Lyon’s secondary medical school.

Place Gensoul has a rectangular shape. Two rows of benches provide seating. A rectangular stone column stands as a centerpiece. Each face of the column showcases dolphin decorations. They hold tridents and maces. At the top, a vase adorned with a goat adds to the artistic flair. A fountain graces the base. Lions on opposite sides spout water. The water flows into a stone trough.

Imagine the square bustling with activity. People stroll by. Some pause to sit on the benches. They enjoy the ambiance of Place Gensoul. The fountain provides a soothing sound. It is a welcome escape from the city’s hustle.

The square is more than just an open space. It’s a tribute to Lyon’s history. It also recognizes its industrial past. The monument reflects the city’s artistic spirit. Take a moment to appreciate the details. Note the dolphins, the goat, and the lions. Each element tells a story. This square symbolizes Lyon’s evolution. It has transformed from an industrial hub. Now, it is a cultural center. Place Gensoul is a place where history and art converge.
